Simply put, pianist Lori Mecham’s ‘Brazilian Christmas’ is one of our favorite Brazilian-themed holiday CDs – a beautifully crafted instrumental set which combines the natural elegance of the Bossa beat with the quiet charm of these end-of-year evergreens. A quick tip of Santa's hat to Ivan Lins for creating a memorable, entertaining CD filled with enough holiday magic: It's really no surprise that this Christmas collection opens with a trans-hemispheric surprise of it own; A duet with Jose Feliciano singing 'Feliz Navidad' - in Portuguese! Leave it to Carioca chanteuse Ithamara Koorax to give us another ‘first’ for Bossa Nova as it enters its 6th decade. Here’s a never-before collection of songs written by João Gilberto, lovingly crafted with only her voice and the masterful guitar play of Juarez Moreira, then expertly produced by the legendary Arnaldo DeSouteiro. Even more intriguing when you consider that Gilberto - the man who invented Bossa Nova - has written these very few (but wonderful!) songs! An exciting introduction to newcomer Patricia Talem, who is poised to claim her place in the star-studded universe of Brazilian female vocalists. With songs from Rita Lee, Ron Sexsmith, Flavio Venturini and Chico Buarque plus excellent production and top-notch musicality from guitarist Sandro Albert and Yelllowjackets members Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip, everything falls into place for Talem, who’s delivered as stunning a debut as we’ve heard in a long, long whileMariano’s guitar play is legendary in Brazil: His variety of style ranges from airy acoustic Bossas to electric energy (Jeff Beck was an early influence). ‘So Far From Home’ is a soulful blend of Torcuato today, with special guests Hamilton de Holanda and saxophonist Michael Lington! Pianist and singer Eliane Elias returns to her original label to offer up a collection of jazz and Brazilian favs, framed by strings and the eloquent touch of Oscar Castro-Neves' guitar and guest vocalist Ivan Lins. Her best album in years – and a return to her roots!

Contemporary jazz meets Brazil on this richly layered, multifaceted collection of instrumental and vocal tunes in Portuguese, Spanish and English, each guided by guitarist Ed Johnson’s ‘second nature’ sense of South American swing! Slowdown's sound combines jazzy melodies and breezy Bossa Nova to create 'the perfect musical picture postcard' of Brazil! At last! One of the most requested albums ever played on The Sounds of Brazil radio show is coming to CD! There’s no doubt that Rosalia de Souza is one of the best next-gen voices for Brazil’s New Bossa style and for her third album she offers up a vibrant collection of songs that focus on a warm, acoustic jazz combo sound that sways and pulses with an energy all its own. Bebel’s music always carries a charismatic tone, but now you can add ‘intimacy’ to your list for this, her fourth album. Recorded in the US, Brazil and Jamaica, her unique role as a femme fatal/Brazilian crooner comes via her familial birthright, her NYC birthplace and teen years in Rio de Janeiro. Whatever, because when she begins to sing, you can’t help but get caught up in it. With Daniel Jobim, Carlinhos Brown and Didi Gutman of the Beat Girls.

Great songs, superb production and an outstanding voice combine for what could be a ‘Perfect Storm’ collection for de Mata and this EP from her 2007 album ‘Sim’ is the perfect introduction. Five songs including the top radio hit ‘Boa Sorte/Good Luck’ with Ben Harper! Pianist Catalano is equally comfortable with contemporary jazz as he is with Brazilian music, so it’s no surprise that when the two are combined, the result is extraordinary. A bakers’ dozen that reaches across musical borders with songs like ‘Coast To Coast (Take Me Back To Rio)’ and Dindi, featuring Ivan Lins singing different version in Portuguese and English! With Bob James, Randy Brecker and Chuck Loeb.Keep the memories of Rio's most exciting Carnaval parades with the official CD of the 2009 celebration. You don't have to know a thing about Carnaval to enjoy its pulsating rhythms and the excitement that insistent beat of the bateria can provide! Limited quantitiesHard to believe that this is Basia’s first studio album since 1994 but fans of the Polish pop star have received this album with overwhelming enthusiasm. With brothers Danny and Peter White

Sade is a rare international pop icon and the personification of cool - especially in Brazil where her smooth style is a perfect match for the land of Samba and sun. This title from the Bossa Now! series amplifies that notion of sophisticated style by taking 10 of her best songs and giving them a contemporary instrumental re-do in that legendary Bossa Nova style! One of the best 'Best Of' compilations for Djavan that we'vee seen in a very long time. These 18 songs cover the full range of this singer's career: from early hits like 'Lilas', 'Capim' and 'Sina', to current classsics inlcuding 'Eu Tu Devoro, 'Oceano' and 'Se'. A 'must have' collection for Djavan fans.

With string arrangements by Claus Ogerman (Antonio Carlos Jobim’s favorite arranger) and Johnny Mandell (Frank Sinatra’s favorite arranger) this double-album CD re-issue stands today as one of the best collections of João Gilberto’s recordings at the height of his career. An essential CD for any Brazilian music collection! For the past several years, Ruy Castro’s book “Chega de Saudade” has been a favorite book selection for our readers. Now, an English version has been made available, easing our never ending struggle with Portuguese verb conjugations! At least long enough to enjoy this unmatched history of Bossa Nova.Salena’s ‘Saraha Vaughn-like’ on this historic CD marks Jobim’s final recording before his passing. He sings and plays piano along with son Paulo and grandson Daniel. 20 bit K2 supercoding makes for a superb listening experience. This historic debut was recorded in April 1964 - half a world away and exactly 13 months after the legendary Getz/Gilberto sessions. Sá’s lightly romantic voice carries that same slightly out-of-tune charisma that became a calling card for Bossa Nova. An early classic and a favorite CD with our staff.

From 1966, this CD is possibly Astrud Gilberto's finest recording, bringing us a number of timeless hits for us to enjoy: ‘Call Me’, ‘Goodbye Sadness’ and her definitive version of ‘So Nice (Summer Samba)’ have remained untouchable. With Walter Wanderley’s trio and João Gilberto! If João Gilberto is ‘The Father of Bossa Nova’, then surely Antonio Carlos Jobim must be its Godfather. Recorded in New York four years after the birth of Bossa, this is Antonio Carlos Jobim’s first album as a featured artist, with beautiful instrumentals of his most famous songs! Critically acclaimed Souza turns the tables on Brazil’s Bossa with this unparalleled collection of pop classics – from James Taylor and Joni Mitchell to Steely Dan, Jobim and Michael McDonald. Superlatives fail when Luciana begins to sing. Highly recommended!Recorded only with voice, guitar and light percussion, this CD is an intimate portrait of João Gilberto, whose voice toys with nuance on these 10 songs, including ‘Waters of March’, ‘Undiú’ and ‘Izuara’ – a duet featuring his second wife Miucha. Highly recommended!

Old friends reunite for a low-key look back at 12 lesser known Bossa gems featuring Paul Winter’s soprano sax on the melodic line. Includes ‘Aula De Matematica’, ‘Canto Triste’, ‘Coisa Mais Linda’.Having now passed from life to legend, Bonfa’s guitar mastery remains at the pinnacle and this 1962 studio setting show us an earlier side of his talent with 13 Bossa Nova gems. This is a musical tribute to a living legend, the ‘father of Bossa Nova’ – Joao Gilberto, and Passos retraces his career by reflecting his obvious influence on her own, while tapping into the genius of top producer Jorge CalandrelliEmilio’s ‘Bossa Nova’ was tapped as a Latin Grammy nominee and his deep rich voice washes over you like the blush of a fine wine. Each of the 15 tracks satisfy in this remarkable romantic collection of Bossa hits. Emílio truly has the Midas touch, and uses his talent to revitalizing every song he sings.

This the real Bossa Nova: an uncompromising collection of 36 songs by the musicians who invented the style - different than those north of the equator who rode the Bossa wave via interpretation. That’s the difference that makes this 2 CD set a highly recommended masterpiece! Recorded in the studio of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s home overlooking Rio de Janeiro, the trio of Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto create a revealing new collection of the music of Jobim, the master of Bossa Nova in this all-acoustic setting! Now that Bossa Nova has turned 50 – an amazing fact in itself – various labels are scrambling to showcase the event. But few can compete with this collection of classics taken from the recording vaults of Bossa Nova pioneer Roberto Menescal’s label, Albatroz Music. The result is a compilation which captures the essence and evolution of Bossa Nova’s five decadesThis homage to the Beatles is a personal one for Rita Lee, who reinvents these 11 songs with their original English lyrics and a Bossa flair. The CDs near-perfect pacing is easy and natural – and a sheer joy to listen to! With three bonus tracks in Portuguese.

"Once I Loved" with Shirley Horn's caressing vocals and John Hendrick's inventive scatting on "No More Blues" (Chega Da Saudade), Other Jobim favorites from those early Bossa years include 'The Girl From Ipanema and 'Agua de Beber' (Water To Drink). Twenty of Ivan Lins bets songs are gathered together for this specially-priced 'best of' compilation, making it a great choice for your Brazilian collection. This best-of CD is a perfect introduction to one of Brazil’s next-gen pop stars, whose knack for catchy hooks is matched by the good musical taste necessary to keep the Brazilian beat vital and exciting. Vercilo’s voice inevitably draws comparisons to Djavan – as does his swinging style! Recorded 'live' in studio, without overdubs or edits, this outstanding CD is a stellar example of contemporary Brazilian musical talent squarely focused on nearly two dozen of Brazil's great songs from days gone by. The styles aren't nearly as contemporary as the singer, but that's the great truth about Duncan: She's not at all shy about going back to cherish her country's strong musical heritage. The approach here is simple quartet interplay: striped down Samba, eloquent and jazzy Choros and romantically 'mad about you' ballads - all loosely tied together by virtue of the performer's abilities in the here and now! This songbook collection of Ary Barroso classics marks the beginning of Gal Costa entering the prime of her long career: Her voice is supple and strong, emotive and delicate. Her duet with long-time friend and songwriter Caetano Veloso was a #1 hit in Brazil and stands today as one of her most cherished songs. An essential CD for any Brazilian music collection.

This is Djavan entering the peak of his career: his voice is supple and sharp in English and Portuguese, his range matching his abilities; his standout pop songwriting is fresh and uniquely Brazilian. One of two new CDs released by Marisa Monte in 2006, this 13 song collection is an MPB tour de force, with special guests Carlinhos Brown and Seu Jorge with stunning arrangements by Deodato and Philip Glass! Jean Felix has a deep and richly textured voice, which invites comparison to Swing Out Sister's Corrine Drewery - a modern-day Brazilian chanteuse with a jazzy sensibility and a special ability to really get inside a song and bring its story to life. Here’s an unmatched collection of softly styled MPB with José Luis Bonfá’s songwriting skills to frame her talent on this memorable debut CD! As is often the case with genius, its fair to say that Gilberto Gil’s body of work has been uneven through the course of decades – that why we’re very pleased to offer this CD for your consideration. Song for song, we think that ‘Realce’ is one of his best: It’s included in our Connectbrazil “Essential CDs’ list.

As a protégé of Caetano Veloso, this singer’s pioneering use of Bossa fused with electronica is mesmerizing. The result speaks for itself. with this album earning our 1997 “Best Debut Album” award. The group’s best in its 16 year history. Three voices weave Jazz and MPB together with such precision that you’d swear it was just another studio illusion. Talent and harmony in abundance.

Pianist Ariel reunites with guitarist Ricardo Silveira and two other original members of the 80’s supergroup Zil for this quartet set of Brazilian jazz with a contemporary sheen. The group’s full sound, clever and inspiring arrangements and overall musicianship make this a winning follow up to Ariel’s earlier ‘My Only Passion’ and ‘Magic Eyes’ CDs!Often overlooked by Brazilian jazz purists, this hard-to-find CD is a stellar ‘crossover’ recording featuring pianist Cunliffe’s LA style with Brazilians Oscar Castro-Neves, Marcos Ariel, Ricardo Silveira on ‘Long Time Coming’, ‘Leblon’ and nine more. As one of her final appearances in a recording studio, Sarah Vaughn's ‘Brazilian Romance’ is undeniably elegant and sophisticated with Sergio Mendes producing, Dori Caymmi's strings and Milton Nascimento as a special guest. ‘Lift Me Up’ is Mariano’s 4th release and his sense of melody and songwriting skills makes a bold musical statement that’s sure to turn lots of heads this summer and win new fans of this Rio-based guitar player.

Negri is a master jazz guitarist who converses with the Brazilian lexicon with the ease, rhythm and flair of a hard working Carioca musician. But what’s surprising about Afternoon In Rio, is how warm, beautifully understated most of the album is. Pianist Steve Barta has crafted a masterpiece of Brazilian jazz, inviting guitarist Ricardo Silveira, and flutist Herbie Mann to bring his songs to life. Includes ‘Wish Upon A Canvas’, and ‘Blue River’. Electric or acoustic, Moreira’s eloquent style sets him apart from other guitarists. The songs paint musical panoramas, at once relaxing, joyous, sustaining. Emotion from six strings and a creative musical mind. As one of her final appearances in a recording studio, Sarah Vaughn's ‘Brazilian Romance’ is undeniably elegant and sophisticated with Sergio Mendes producing, Dori Caymmi's strings and Milton Nascimento as a special guest.

The history of Rio de Janeiro unfolds line by line, story by interesting story from the ‘treasure trove’ mind of Ruy Castro, who also penned the award-winning book ‘Bossa Nova’. Think you know Rio, Read this book and you’ll be amazed at the events and people who chronicle this city’s unique tale. For many participants, Carnaval makes up the fabric of their social and personal lives. The book 'Samba' by Alma Gullermoprieto documents the author's yearlong diary, which follows the day-to-day lives of the residents of Rio's famous Mangueira favela. Samba is an exhilarating account of her personal journey into a world not often viewed by outsiders, a revealing look at the culture and history of Carnaval from a participant's perspective!'The Brazilian Sound' by Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha keeps adding laurels to its long list of accomplishments: It has been named as the best selling world music book of 1998. It also holds the distinct honor of being the most comprehensive English language guide to the full panorama of Brazilian music. Written in an easy to read format, The Brazilian Sound explores every major song style and rhythm, including Samba, Bossa Nova, MPB and the music of Bahia and the Northeast with insightful histories of the artists who make the music come alive!Inadequately described as the John Lennon or the Bob Dylan of his country, Caetano Veloso has virtually personified Brazilian music for thirty-five years. Now, in his long-awaited memoir, he tells the personal story of how, in the late sixties, he and a group of friends from the Northeastern state of Bahia created Tropicálismo, the movement that shook Brazilian culture! This is also a well painted panorama of Brazilian music and culture, as seen through the witty eyes of its talented author!

A special treat! The 31 colorful costumes are artfully detailed designs from Carmen Miranda’s Years in Hollywood, 1940-1953, including gowns and dresses from the movies ‘Down Argentine Way’, ‘Weekend in Havanna’, ‘Copacabana’, ‘Nancy Goes To Rio’, ‘Four Jills In A Jeep’, ‘A Date With Judy’ and many more. What is it like to govern Brazil - one of the world's most notoriously ungovernable, most vibrant countries? Brazil's former president offers a candid, wry, illuminating view. In English. Highly recommended. For the past several years, Ruy Castro’s book “Chega de Saudade” has been a favorite book selection for our readers. Now, an English version has been made available, easing our never ending struggle with Portuguese verb conjugations! At least long enough to enjoy this unmatched history of Bossa Nova. 1958 was an amazing year: In politics, sports, music and on the world stage, Brazil was on the rise. Here’s a nostalgic look at the innocence of that single year - when Brazil took its first steps as a country of tolerance, back to the days when there was a feeling that every dream could be fulfilled. The pictures alone bring these events to life! (Portuguese only)

This 'best of' CD gathers Lee Ritenour's personal choices from his Brazilian recordings on these 11 tracks. With Joao Bosco, Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Djavan. Gonzaguinha, Herbie Hancock and many more!Salena Sings Jobim With The Jobims holds 14 tracks, including 'Dindi', 'Once I Loved', 'One Note Samba' and 'Bonita'. Jobim sings and plays piano on four others in a family affair that includes son Paulo (flute, guitar), and grandson Daniel (piano). The album was mastered with 20 bit K2 supercoding, making for a superb listening experience. How good is this recording? Chicago Sun Times jazz writer Mark Ruffin was shocked to learn that it wasn't Sarah Vaughan's voice! This CD became a hard-to-find classic when the Velas label abruptly ceased operations a few years ago but this "Best of" compilation is an exquisitely sequenced disc that does an almost perfect job in sketching the still evolving career of this singer/guitarist with the pretty alto voice and lilting playing style. Even in Brazil, Passos' early recordings may only show up occasionally, so these selections serve as a perfect introduction to the singer for the Americans who have never heard her. And the compositions are by names even the most casual Brasilian music fan knows: Jobim, Djavan and Dori Caymmi. 'The Songs of Milton Nascimento' is an exciting grouping of the songwriter's best work. Each song is beautifully arranged in a contemporary jazz setting, allowing the emphasis on Nascimento's melodic creativity. The production quality and musicianship are superb on 'San Vincente', 'Morro Velho', 'Clube da Esquina' and eight others. This album magically illustrates the lyrical nature of Milton's music, but without the words!

It’s the music of Vinicius de Moraes transformed to the New Bossas sound via Paula Morelenbaum’s charming vocals and a who’s who of the best musical talent in Rio and São Paulo! With sax great Leo Gandelman, guitarists Paulo Jobim and Celso Fonseca plus Bossacucanova, too! ‘Garota Moderna’ has earned a place at the top of a long list of New Bossa CDs. And just like our best-selling ‘Nueva Bossa Nova’ compilation CD, this music is the happy result of a rekindled excitement in Bossa Nova. Its all about the music. DJ/singer Emanuele Cucchi’s musical influence for his group Nu Braz comes from jazz, Italian 60’s soundtracks and all of this lends itself to a certain nostalgic swagger behind the microphone. Think ‘Rat Pack Meets Caetano Veloso’ on these 12 tracks of groovy, swinging New Bossa hits! Sabrina is the daughter of Azymuth bass player, Alex Malheiros, and these 12 songs build on the New Bossa polish of her debut CD. Old school meets new school with members of Azymuth and top remixers providing the midas touch! Recorded at Leo Gandelman’s Zaga Studio in Rio de Janeiro!

This is the kind of CD that Rio’s Chamber of Commerce should hand out to tourists as mementos of their visit to the land of the Samba. This is 21st century Brazilians Samba in all its up-tempo, feel-good, toe-tapping, body-jolting glory. Here’s the rare, original recording of Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moreas’ ‘Os Afro Sambas’. This CD is held in the highest regard by Brazilophiles as one of the most esteemed contemporary Brazilian music albums ever recorded. Each of these songs have been handed over to a select list of New Bossa groups and club DJs who artfully infuse the sounds and ambiance of Brazilian soccer – crowd noise, sound effects and even ‘play by play’ announcers – to create a cultural panorama of Samba and sport. A beautiful CD for ‘the Beautiful Game’! Maria Rita’s new CD is filled with previously unrecorded Sambas from Brazil’s greatest composers, and she invited as special guests the ‘old guard’ Samba masters from Mangueira to join in the celebration. A brilliant tribute from one of Brazil’s rising stars.
