Named after one of Rio's best known (and well-traveled) train stops, Guinga's ‘Suite Leopoldina’ opens with this Brazilian guitarist and composer teamed with the great Belgian harmonica player Toots Thielemans and backed by lush and lyrical string arrangements to open a celebration of the musical images and impressions of his Carioca youth. Two tracks, "Dos Anjos" and "Constance" are the bookends to an aural tour of Rio de Janeiro’s thoroughly distinctive music idiom.

But there's more: Vocalists Chico Buarque and Alceu Valença guest star on the Tropicália influenced tunes, and clarinetist Paulo Santo and saxophonist Ze Nogueira play classic Choro pieces to fully capture the true essence of Rio and its people. Contemporary Brazilian jazz is spotlighted with stunning turns by accordion player and pianist Gilson Peranzetta and vocalist Ed Motta, who takes a page from George Benson for his wordless vocal spot on "Par Constante."

Today, Rio's musical profile isn't just Bossa Nova or Samba, and ‘Suite Leopoldina’ provides many unique stops along its musical route. So even if you don't know the difference between say, Ivan Lins' guest singing on the MPB of "Guia De Cego," or Lenine's scatty rendition of "Mingus Samba," ‘Suite Leopoldina’, with its all-star cast and pliant, smart arrangements happily show that Guinga's first US release (and his fourth and best-album-to-date) is a most pleasurable musical tour of Rio, the Cidade Maravelhosa.
