Named
after one of Rio's best known (and well-traveled)
train stops, Guinga's 'Suite Leopoldina' opens
with this Brazilian guitarist and composer teamed
with the great Belgian harmonica player Toots
Thielemans and backed by lush and lyrical string
arrangements to open a celebration of the musical
images and impressions of his Carioca youth. Two
tracks, "Dos Anjos" and "Constance"
are the bookends to an aural tour of Rio de Janeiro's
thoroughly distinctive music idiom.
But
there's more: Vocalists Chico Buarque and Alceu
Valença guest star on the Tropicália
influenced tunes, and clarinetist Paulo Santo
and saxophonist Ze Nogueira play classic Choro
pieces to fully capture the true essence of Rio
and its people.
