Vila Isabel Crowned Carnaval Champs
- by Scott Adams

It took 18 years, ten rounds of balloting to break a tie with Grande Rio and $250,000 from a South American despot, but G.R.E.S. Vila Isabel won big with it's Pan-Latin American theme.

Cidade de Samba, Rio de Janeiro - Quadra Vila Isabel erupted with pure alegria (joy) today, when it was declared the winner of this year's Carnaval competition for Rio de Janeiro's Escolas de Samba by the judging panel at the city's famous Sambadrome.

After 10 rounds of balloting for categories including best song, best overall presentation, best costumes and best storyline, the culmination of the eight judges and their individual scoring drew a tie between Vila Isabel and the Grande Rio samba school at exactly 397.6 points.

It marked the first tie in the history of Rio's Carnaval competition. After deliberation, the judges declared the winner based on the greater number of wins within the 10 categories.

This year, Vila Isabel focused on a wider, pan-Latin American theme for its presentation. Titled 'Soy Loco Por Ti América: A Vila Canta A Latinidade' - based loosely on Caetano Veloso's 1967 hit, and with lyrics in Spanish and Portuguese, the popular Samba School was a dark horse favorite when the annual 'Sambas de Enredo' CD compilation was released last November.

However, controversy surrounding the BR$250,000 'donation' by Venezuelan despot Hugo Chávez clouded the proceedings. Chaváz has been widely criticized for his use of propaganda at the expense of his country's poor.

Vila Isabel was last crowned champion in 1988.

Here is the final order for RIos' Samba Schools:

01. Vila Isabel
02. Grande-Rio

Sangue “caliente” corre na veia
É noite no Império do Sol
A Vila Isabel semeia
Sua poesia em “portunhol”
E vai...buscar num vôo à imensidão
Dourados frutos da ambição
Tropical por natureza
Fez brotar a miscigenação

“Soy loco por tí América”
Louco por teus sabores
Fartura que impera, mestiça Mãe Terra
Da integração das cores

Nas densas “florestas de cultura”
Do “sombrero” ao chimarrão
Sendo firme sem perder “la ternura”
E o amor por este chão
Em límpidas águas, a clareza
Liberdade a construir
Apagando fronteiras, desenhando
Igualdade por aqui
“Arriba”, Vila!!!
Forte e unida
Feito o sonho do Libertador
A essência latina é a luz de Bolívar
Que brilha num mosaico multicor

Para bailar “La Bamba”, cair no samba
Latino-americano som
No compasso da felicidade
“Irá pulsar mi corazón”
