The
Girls From Ipanema
| CD |
| Rio
has not only inspired hundreds of memorable songs,
it's also paved the way for countless talented Brazilian
performers. We'll focus on the women, with tunes
from 15 famous Carioca queens, including Sylvia
Telles (L), Celia Vaz, Joyce, Cris Delano, Astrud
Gilberto, Gal Costa, Zizi Possi and others. As you'll
hear, Jobim's famous song 'The Girl From Ipanema'
was only the beginning! There's more: Smooth jazzers
Steve Cole, Pat Metheny and Jonathan Butler with
Rick Braun cross over to give us their translations
on Brazilian style, plus Yutaka and pianist Hiroko
Kokubu show us the Japanese side of Brazilian jazz.
There's even a tune from Luciana Souza's The New
Bossa Nova CD - and who is that she's singing with,
anyway? You'll be pleasantly surprised! |

The
Brazilian Side of Smooth Jazz
| CD |
| We
have only to look back at the success of Stan Getz,
Astrud Gilberto and Sergio Mendes to understand
Brazilian music's role in the creation of today's
Smooth Jazz style - and although its influence has
seemingly waned in recent years, its only because
the dots haven't been connected. Consider that artists
as diverse as Praful and Lee Ritenour have found
their beginnings with Brazilian groups and you'll
appreciate our program's focus! This sampler is
packed with smooth jazzers near and far, in every
conceivable combination, with more than a few surprises
along the way: Marc Antoine, Leo Gandelman, Dave
Koz, Michael Franks, Brenda Russell, Kirk Whalum
and Bobby Caldwell all step into the spotlight! |

Beach
Blanket Bossa
| CD |
| Its
an 'all-Bossa, all-the-time' bonanza with each tune
hand-picked for a relaxing day seaside. You'll find
an amazing collection of favorites from Sergio Mendes
& Brazil 66, Astrud Gilberto and Antonio Carlos
Jobim - but that's just scratching the surface.
Fresh sounds abound from Marcos Valle,Stan Getz,
Wanda Sa, Velas, Carol Rogers and Deodato, too.
There are some rare songs, too: Germany's New Bossa
group Slowdown, Keyvn Lettau and hard-to-find favorite
from Rosa Passos graces this playlist. Plus new
music from pianist Antonio Adolfo and singer Carol

Mas
Qe Nada

| CD |
| With
the exception of 'The Girl From Ipanema' no single
Brazilian song is more popular around the world
than 'Mas Que Nada', and the story behind the song
is almost as entertaining. After all, this song
would never have made the trip north from Rio if
it hadn't been for Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert
and that's not to say that the original version
from 1963 isn't great - it really is! - and we'll
hear those versions, along with a few more that
really show the song's universal appeal. Guitarist
Marc Antoine, Hugh Masekela's trumpet and Al Jarreau
will put their own signature on versions that will
surprise and entertain! There's more in store: Philippe
Saisse revives a Liz Eça classic along with
songs by Kenia, Brazilian guitar master Luis Bonfá,
Quincy Jones with an Ivan Lins love song - even
Jonathan Butler and Rick Braun go 'Brazilian'! Plus
Antonio Adolfo with Carol Saboya, pianist Marcos
Ariel and Machan, too! |

Brazil
Chill
| CD |
| ''Chill'
is one of those musical terms that refuses to be
nailed down - it's ambient, it's electronic. It's
free form, it's rhythmic. It's jazz, it's rock,
it's new age, it's progressive. Sometimes you don't
even know it's Chill when you hear it. Maybe it's
no surprise that the words 'Brazil' and 'Chill'
sound so good together. What began in 1960s Brazil
is new again and we'll sample the freshest 'downtempo'
sounds that build on Bossa's traditions in exciting
ways - Bebel Gilberto with Thievery Corporation,
Bossacucanova, Bobby Brazil, Otto and Jun Miyake
are just a few of the names gracing this playlist.
Machan scats through her 'Blossom' for us and Torcutao
Mariano picks up the guitar, too. And Brazil's Chill
goes 'Old School' with songs from Azymuth, MPB master
Flavio Venturini, a throwback track from Full Circle
and sax star Stan Getz! |

Rare
Brazilian Gems
| CD |
| Its
perfectly natural to want what you can't have, and
far too many great Brazilian CDs disappear from
the store shelves - never to return. But this playlist
features nearly two dozen musical 'gems' - including
long lost or hard-to-find tracks from Roseanna Vitro,
Djavan, Kenia, Yutaka and many others. You're sure
to pick up on some of your favorites! How about
seldom heard songs from Salena Jones with Antonio
Carlos Jobim (his last recording before he passed
away), along with sax stars Nelson Rangel and Paul
Desmond? Or Luiz Avellar's piano ballad, 'Meu Pais'?
Remember how happy you were when you found the wallet
you thought was lost forever? This sampler's just
like that! |

Duotones
| CD |
| We've
doubled up the music with dozen of top duets! What
a great idea: Going 'old school' to enjoy Dick Farney
and Norma Bengal sing 'Vocé', then turning
to George Michael with Astrud Gilberto as they team
up in Portuguese. More musical match ups? How about
Gal Costa with Bobby McFerren, saxophonist Paul
Winter with guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, plus Dionne
Warwick with Chico Buarque, and a classic from Helio
Delmiro's guitar with pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano.
There are perfect pairings with Kevyn Lettau and
Sergio Mendes, sax great Leo Gandelman and Samba
master Luis Melodia, Maria Bethania & João
Gilberto and don't miss an unforgettable duet featuring
Brenda Russell and Ivan Lins, too. You'll enjoy
a classic Brazilian jazz track from Antonio Adolfo
while Marcos Ariel and the Pat Metheny Group bring
us enough music to capture the spotlight for themselves.

| Here's
a portrait of one of Brazilian music's biggest multinational
conglomerates - no, its not a record label - but
one of Brazil's top families of song: the Gilberto's.
When it comes to Bossa Nova, no other Brazilian
family comes close to achieving what João
Gilberto, his ex-wives Astrud Gilberto and Miucha,
and his daughter Bebel Gilberto have created and
this playlist explores many of their very best songs,
along with the stories behind them. There's more:
Baisa borrows the Bossa beat - as do bassist Wayman
Tisdale and guitarist Ricardo Silveira, while the
Scandinavian jazz group Full Circle reprises an
early Brazilian jazz hit, plus a New Bossa groove
from Italy's Toco and favorites from saxophonist
Luis Bonfá, saxophonist Leo Gandelman and

| Here's
a salute to Samba in its many forms to underscore
its role as the musical pulse of an entire nation.
You'll hear it on the radio in Brazil's largest
cities: São Paulo, Rio and Salvador, Bahia
and feel it on the streets in the smallest townships
from north to south. And every Brazilian summer
showcases the unique traditions of Carnaval just
as this playlist does for the Samba beat. In the
Brazilian tradition, there's a Samba to fit every
mood and occasion and you'll find variety here:
There's the authentic style from Jairzinho Oliveira
and Jussara Silveira, warm Samba ballads from saxophonist
Nelson Rangell and Leila Pinheiro, and Jazz-Sambas
from Pat Metheny, and Larry Coryell live from Bahia.
There's Samba Pop from Wei Chi and Emilio Santiago
to help lead the parade. Plus Bobby Brazil's Bossa
grooves, a great Samba stepper from Bossacucanova
and Toco's impressive Samba CD from Italy. Oba! |

here. Listen to Cesar Camargo Mariano's dual skills
behind the piano and synths for one Stevie Wonder
tune - and then another from harpist Roberto Perera
in three languages! Plus Milton Nascimento, Sao
Paulo siren Jean Felix, and a soulful charmer from
vocalist Tutti Bae. There's a New Bossa treat from

Divas
From Bahia
| CD |
| Salvador,
Bahia sits on Brazil's northeastern coast, bathed
in sunshine and near-equatorial heat. The 500 year-old
city was the first port-of-call for the trade routes
and slave ships from Angola and the Gold Coast and
it's because of this that Bahia has the strongest
cultural connection to Mother Africa. This is where
the roots of Brazilian music incubated to inspire
this playlist which focuses in on the music of several
of Bahia's best: Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury, Astrud
Gilberto, Maria Bethania, Nana Caymmi and Vania
Abreu. But we've cloaked these Divas within a musical
travelogue to let you explore Salvador musically
with songs from Dionne Warwick, João Gilberto,
guitarist Larry Coryell, Dori Caymmi and Gilberto
Gil. Both Cuban guitarist Toledo and Germany's Berward
Koch get their passports stamped in Bahia this week
while songs from Phillipe Saisse, Basia and a Grover
Washington Jr. Samba will ease your transition back
home. So pack lightly and leave room for lots of
great music! |

if you're a Beatles fan and a Brazil nut you won't
believe your ears: even we were impressed with how
it all came together! That's what makes this week's
show so special: There's Leo Gandelman and Torcuato
Mariano, Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso. Fantastic
Beatles ballads from Rita Lee and Zizi Possi and
guitar mastery from Toninho Horta. Sergio Mendes
