A Pop Star Expresses His Love Of Brazil In Song
Gregory Abbott’s ‘Como Em Casa’: Brazil Is Inside Of Me captures the spirit of Rio!
When we last met up with Gregory Abbott, it was on the beach at Copacabana. A starlit night, strolling to the rhythm of luminous waves pushed by the offshore breeze. โWhisper The Wordsโ went on to become one of 2024โs favorite love songs and an Urban Bossa classic:
Ahhh, Ahhh, whisper the words that hypnotize me, sing to me all through the night. Ha ya ya ya, feeling your body here beside me, warming my soul with your light.
This year, Abbott returns with a new single, โComo Em Casa (Brazil Is Inside of Me)โ. Bright and breezy and intimately inspired by lifelong memories.
โComo Em Casa (Brazil Is Inside of Me)โ: Rioโs Inspiration
Gregory Abbottโs chart-topping โShake You Downโ won 1987โs coveted Soul Train Award for Best Male Single. But Abbott was elsewhere, getting his passport stamped in Brazil, where โShake You Downโ was shaking up radio playlists from Pernambuco to Santa Caterina.
TV Globo welcomed him in Rio, where he was introduced to an up and coming pop singer, Rosanna. Since they were both on the CBS label, the opportunity to record a duet was too good to resist. A few days turned into a few more, then several.
Thatโs when Gregory Abbott fell in love with Brazil. And memories from those days became inspiration for this new song.
The Story behind Gregory Abbott’s โComo Em Casa (Brazil Is Inside of Me)โ
It was mid-October when an e-mail from Gregory Abbott arrived, and I couldnโt help but smile:
โAttached is a new creation (โComo em Casaโ), that we are thinking of releasing sometime after the holiday season. We wanted to give you a โheads up,โ it read.
We shared a few emails about the song, and the version youโre listening to now arrived a few short weeks ago. So, I reached out to Gregory with a simple question. โโComo Em Casaโ is much different than โWhisper The Wordsโ. What inspired you to pen such a bright and uplifting song?โ
And Gregory Abbottโs answer opened up a very personal side to a man who wanted to give back by paying it forward.
Como Em Casa is both reflective and inspirational
Hereโs Gregory Abbott, in the moment:
I was first introduced to Brazilian culture when, as a youngster, I saw the movie Black Orpheus. The rhythm, the joy, the music of this movie really resonated for me, (and of course me and all my friends had a crush on Marpessa Dawn, the beautiful lead actress). When years later I visited Brazil, I was not disappointed.
What impacted me most after the incredible beauty I would say, was the zeitgeist of the culture. The world view, the passion and joy with which Brazilians live their lives. This was true wherever I went from the beachfronts surrounding the bay to the favelas. It was evident in the martial artists, the musicians and in the everyday folks.
It also helped that when I got there, it seemed like everyone looked like me; the result of the blending of many different ethnicities, which reminded me of my family, and these various blends contribute to the overall charming tapestry of the culture.
I’ve been delighted to have the chance of creating music with Brazilian musicians, so Brazil for me, is definitely a place that I have internalized and taken with me wherever I’ve gone.
All this has inspired me to write โComo Em Casaโ.
Yours Sincerely,
Gregory Abbott

Lyrics for Gregory Abbott’s โComo Em Casa (Brazil Is Inside of Me)โ
Soaring high in the clouds. First time to Rio
the emerald waters reaching for the sky
Iโd always heard of the Christ on Corcovado
protecting the bay below with arms held wide
Mist on the beach and Sugarloaf peak
(Wow)
A land Iโve grown so fond of
Ticuna queens all walking tan and proud
(Lovely)
The view is a treat theyโre keeping the beat
of soul seducing samba
(Just like the rhythm of life)
I feel It in my heart, now Iโve come to realize that
CHORUS
Iโm never alone wherever I go
Brazil it lives inside me
Freedom and joy, a lovely place to be
It feel like Iโm home now that I know
Espirito it will guide me
Once youโve been there you will surely see
(Iโm never alone wherever I go my heart lives in Brazil
The wind and the sea forever with me
A joy that lasts a lifetime
Iโm never alone, wherever I go I just canโt wait untilโฆ
The wind and the sea forever with me
Here me when I say
My heart lives in Brazil)
Mist on the beach and Sugarloaf peak
(Wow)
A land Iโve grown so fond of
Ticuna queens all walking tan and proud
(Lovely)
The view is a treat theyโre keeping the beat
of soul seducing samba
(Just like the rhythm of life)
I feel It in my heart, now Iโve come to realize that
CHORUS
Iโm never alone wherever I go
Brazil it lives inside me
Freedom and joy, a lovely place to be
It feel like Iโm home now that I know
Espirito it will guide me
Once youโve been there you will surely see
(My heart lives in Brazil)
Iโm never alone wherever I go
Brazil it lives inside me
Freedom and joy, a lovely place to be
It feel like Iโm home now that I know
Espirito it will guide me
Once youโve been there you will surely see
